General Motors Recalls Dozens of Electric BrightDrop Vans after Caught Fire

 



BrightDrop vans, a subsidiary of GM, experienced fires in two vehicles in their front-wheel drive units last year. General Motors is issuing a recall notice for around 66 electric vans owned by BrightDrop after the issue occurred. The automaker has recently been exploring the leading cause of these fires. Initial findings recommend that a manufacturing fault may have caused the drive pinion to penetrate the power unit housing, raising the risk of oil leaks and the possibility of fires.

In Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, General Motors believes the fault was limited to larger vehicles manufactured between November 24, 2021, and May 24, 2022. The companies, i.e., FedEx and Walmart, have taken supply of the EV600.

This recall notice does not affect the smaller EV400 vans of BrightDrop. In 2023, GM delivered a total of 497 BrightDrop Vans.

The manufacturer was first informed about this issue on December 8, after it received a report of a fire that had appeared a day earlier. It was not the only event; on December 13, one more fire report came in. General Motors scheduled an investigation into front drive units where the fires had started.

After the overall investigation, General Motors specified that the fire caused a manufacturing error. It determined that units manufactured during a particular production window may have an out-of-specification drive pinion, which cut its way via the casing, resulting in an oil leak. This oil leak causes fire risk.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, the manufacturer has not yet specified the leading cause of the manufacturing error and warns that an automotive fire can be dangerous. However, having information about the leading cause is sufficient to reduce the risk to EV600 drivers.
